Description

Tidal Falls is a natural tidal rapid located in Hancock, Maine, just a short drive from Sullivan. It’s a popular spot where the reversing falls occur due to the ebb and flow of the tides in the Taunton Bay. This phenomenon happens because the bay's narrow channels cause water to rush through during tidal changes, creating powerful rapids and whirlpools that reverse direction with the tides.

Tidal Falls is a beautiful place to visit, especially during high tide when the water is most active. The area around the falls is part of the Tidal Falls Preserve, managed by the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. The preserve offers scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, including seals and various bird species.

Tidal Falls Preserve is a beloved spot for recreation and small gatherings. Please note that the lower preserve is closed to cars in winter, and only accessible by walking. Dogs are not permitted at Tidal Falls Preserve to keep the lawn green and the wildlife happy; all other FBC preserves are dog friendly.

FBC permits small events & gatherings on the preserve. If you’re planning a gathering at Tidal Falls Preserve, please read the event policy and email info@frenchmanbay.org or call (207) 422-2328.

It’s a serene spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Maine's coastline. It's also an excellent place for photography, as the changing tides create unique and dynamic landscapes throughout the day.
